Public, private, and international hospitals

Public hospitals

A straightforward natural birth often costs ¥5,000–20,000. A C-section costs more. Top public hospitals provide excellent medical care. Wards are crowded. English is limited. Partners are often not allowed in the delivery room.

National policy aims to make standard childbirth care essentially free of out-of-pocket costs in 2026 for people insured in the national system, within policy limits. Premium-priced hospitals and items outside the insurance catalog are not covered. Most foreigners on work permits are not covered in the same way as local employees. Ask HR whether 社保 (city medical insurance) applies to you, and which items it covers.

Private Chinese hospitals

Hospitals such as Amcare and New Century usually charge ¥35,000–85,000 for a maternity package. You are more likely to have a private room. The father is more often allowed in the room. English quality depends on the doctor. This is a common choice when you want more English than a public ward, at a lower cost than an international hospital.

International hospitals

United Family and OASIS typically charge ¥60,000–200,000. The range depends on the delivery method and whether there are complications. English-speaking staff are part of the service. So is a detailed bill. Do not choose this option without maternity insurance unless you can pay the high end of the range.
