Hiring a medical translator

When you need one

If neither parent can read a Chinese medical form, do not go to a public 建卡 window alone. A mistranslated allergy or a missed signature can follow you through the pregnancy.

United Family and OASIS do not require a hired translator. Public hospitals and most district 妇幼 hospitals do, unless a partner or friend can stay for the whole morning.

Who to hire

Use a medical interpreter, not a student who “speaks some English.” Ask whether they have sat through an obstetric file day before. A compound ayi is useful for daily life. She is not a substitute at a blood-draw window.

Sources that usually work: the hospital international desk (they sometimes keep a list), a relocation or maternity agency in Beijing, or a recommendation from another foreign parent. Agree the fee, the hours, and whether they will join you in the ultrasound room before the day.

What it costs

Half-day hospital visits commonly run ¥300–800. A full file day can cost more if you keep the interpreter through labs and the doctor visit. Overnight labor support is a separate booking and should be priced in advance.

Pay by WeChat after the visit, not in cash you have not counted. Get the interpreter’s Chinese name and ID number if a hospital desk asks who is accompanying you.

What they should do

Translate questions both ways. Read every printed sheet before you leave the window. Photograph results. Confirm the next appointment date out loud. They should not sign documents for you or guess a medical word they do not know.
