Who this is for

Peking University Third Hospital (北京大学第三医院, 北医三院) is the main public maternity hospital for families in Haidian. This page is a field walkthrough, not the hospital’s official policy. Desks, WeChat menus, and week limits change. Confirm the current rule when you book.

When to start

Start as soon as you have a dating scan that shows a heartbeat, usually around 6–9 weeks. Many families reserve a place (预建档) in that window and complete the formal file (正式建档) around 9–12 weeks. After about 14 weeks, some public hospitals stop taking new low-risk files. Do not wait until the second trimester “to be sure.”

Typical visit rhythm after the file is open: about every four weeks until 28 weeks, every two weeks until 36 weeks, then weekly. The NT scan is usually booked at the formal-file visit for around 11–13 weeks. The anatomy scan is later in the second trimester.

Two doors: regular obstetrics or international medical

Regular obstetrics (普通产科) is the standard public queue. It is the lowest-cost path. Almost everything is in Chinese. Partners are often not allowed in the delivery room. Go with a Mandarin speaker.

The international medical department (国际医疗部) and the special-needs ward (特需) are quieter public floors with more bilingual staff and higher fees. They are still part of the same hospital, not United Family. Ask at the information counter on the ground floor. Do not follow the main obstetrics crowd if this is the door you want.

What to bring

Passports and current residence permits for both parents. A marriage certificate, with a Chinese notarial translation if the original is not in Chinese. The dating-scan printout. Any prenatal blood work from another clinic, translated if you can. Your Chinese phone number. Cash or a working WeChat Pay or Alipay account. The address printed on the residence permit — not the English name of the compound.

If you are not married, one parent is Chinese, or one parent is outside China, read the family-status guide before you go. Some windows will refuse a file without a marriage certificate. Ask the international desk by phone first.

How to book

Most appointments are made in the WeChat official account 「北医三院服务号」. Follow the account, complete real-name registration with a passport or residence permit, then look for obstetrics (产科) or international medical (国际医疗) appointment menus. An English phone desk is sometimes available on weekday daytime hours. Have a Mandarin speaker place the call if the menu is only in Chinese.

Arrive by 7:00 a.m. on the file day. Take a numbered ticket. Budget a full morning: windows, blood, urine, and ultrasound. Eat only if the appointment message says you do not need to fast.

What happens on the day

You will move through several windows. Typical steps: registration, payment, blood and urine, blood pressure and weight, ultrasound, and a short doctor visit. Keep every printed sheet. Photograph each one before you leave the window. Results are not always sent to an app you can read in English.

Ask, and write down the answers: which campus you will deliver at; whether a partner may enter the room; what happens if you need a C-section; how the medical birth certificate is issued; whether epidural is available on your ward. Get the next appointment before you leave the building.

If something looks high-risk

北医三院 is a national-level hospital for high-risk obstetrics and IVF. If another clinic flags a problem, ask for a referral into this hospital rather than starting over at a district hospital. If you are already filed here and the pregnancy becomes complicated, stay in this system unless a doctor sends you to Peking Union Medical College Hospital.
