Maternity insurance

How to tell whether a policy will pay for prenatal care and delivery.

The waiting period

International maternity coverage almost always has a 10–24 month waiting period. If you buy a plan after a positive test, the birth is often excluded. You may still have pediatric coverage after your child is born.

What to read in the policy

Check whether a C-section is treated as standard care or as a complication. Check NICU limits. Many plans exclude or cap neonatal intensive care. Confirm whether the hospital can bill the insurer directly, as United Family and OASIS usually can. Check the newborn enrollment window. Some plans require you to add your baby within 14 or 30 days, or your child is uninsured.

Employer plans labeled “international” are often local products with an English summary. Ask for the maternity chapter in writing. Many work-permit plans do not cover pregnancy.

Local city insurance (社保)

If your employer pays into the city medical scheme, some prenatal and delivery costs at public hospitals may be reimbursed. National policy in 2026 is reducing out-of-pocket childbirth costs for covered items. Reimbursement for foreigners varies by employer and by how the employer registered you. Confirm the details with HR and with the hospital insurance desk.
