Paying without a Chinese ID
WeChat Pay, Alipay, and cash at hospital windows when you only have a passport.
Why this matters before the due date
Public hospitals, community vaccine stations, and many windows expect WeChat Pay, Alipay, or cash. Foreign credit cards often fail. Do not discover this in labor.
What usually works
WeChat Pay and Alipay can be opened with a passport. A mainland bank card still makes verification easier. If you already have a local salary account, bind that card first.
Some foreigners complete real-name verification with a passport and a mainland number. Some are asked for a Chinese ID and get stuck. Start the process on a weekday, not the night before . Keep a second method ready.
If verification fails
Carry cash for public-hospital windows. Ask a trusted colleague to send a WeChat transfer you can show as a backup only if you must — that is a favor, not a system. International hospitals take Visa, Mastercard, and insurance cards they have on file.
UnionPay cards issued by a foreign bank sometimes work at hospital machines. Test one small payment before the file day.
After your baby arrives
Add your child to insurance first. Then store a photocopy of the medical birth certificate with your payment apps. You will use the same WeChat account at the community health station.
